During the first season of Just FYI Pod: Ideas, my cohost Clark Elliston and I will countdown our ten favorite works of theology. On today’s episode, we will feature the #6 book on our respective lists, each of which happen to be written by the great Lutheran theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-45). I will explore Bonhoeffer’s 1937 spiritual classic Discipleship (Nachfolge), while Clark will discuss Bonhoeffer’s posthumously published Ethics (Ethik). Of course, we will also take time to consider Bonhoeffer’s life and legacy, with particular focus on his opposition to Nazism and what it means (or doesn’t mean) for us today.
As always, please consider liking, rating, reviewing, and sharing! Enjoy…
Great discussion, particularly the link between Bonhoeffer and Barth. I remember reading that Barth had no use for his theological training. He considered it as biblical anthropology. He was not prepared to preach. He realized, in his efforts to write his first sermon, that he had nothing to say. We are in a denomination right now that adheres to more progressive Christianity. We feel like, to quote Herman Wouk, “visitors in a foreign country vainly pretending to be natives.”
