Finally got to listen to this one, and I'm surprised Rene Girard didn't factor into the philosophy portion of the discussion! The ending of Dark Knight has "The Scapegoat" written all over it. (Now that I think about it, so does sacrificing someone to a volcano!)
Ha, fair enough! I would say that Kierkegaard’s interest in “sacrifice,” while less systematic than Girard’s, is actually quite similar. David McCracken’s THE SCANDAL OF THE GOSPELS makes this connection. Charles Bellinger has done good work on it as well. But you’re totally right: Girard would make perfect sense here. I’m working an analysis of BATTLING TO THE END as of late. What an amazing and terrifying book…

I went to look up that McCracken book and ended up impulse buying a very cheap used copy, so I'm looking forward to delving into that.
