The main task of Just FYI Pod’s first season is to explore the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time.” Today, in a spooky, Halloween-themed episode, my cohost Amy Welborn and I discuss the #18 film on our respective lists. Amy has chosen William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist; I have selected Martin Scorsese’s 1999 psychological/horror drama Bringing Out the Dead. As ever, links are provided below. Please listen, like, share, and comment!
Oh, and by the way: we initially included two pieces of music in this episode—Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells,” often referred to as The Exorcist’s “theme song,” and Van Morrison’s “T.B. Sheets” (1967), Scorsese’s choice to open Bringing Out the Dead. Based on a few trial runs, we thought that these song clips would run roughly 30 seconds in length, but, alas, they “cashed out” as complete versions! So, the songs ended up on the cutting room floor, despite receiving a reference in the episode itself.
It continues to be a learning process—indeed, the occasional gusts of wind in this episode only add to this point—but we’re figuring things out. We do feel that the content makes the production challenges absolutely worth the trouble!
