JUST FYI POD: CULTURE
SEASON 1, EPISODE 19: “Oscar Talk/Predictions + Our 20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time: #4”
The main task of Just FYI Pod: Culture’s first season is to explore the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time.” On this episode—and following a brief preview of Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards—my cohost Amy Welborn and I continue our discussion. As the #4 film on each of our lists, we have selected Ingmar Bergman’s historical fantasy film The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet, 1957). Set in medieval Denmark, The Seventh Seal is a classic allegory, featuring a world-weary knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), who, locked in a contest with Death, is on a quest to understand the meaning of life. Replete with indelible imagery and perennial spiritual questions, this is one of the greatest movies in the history of world cinema, and it established Bergman as one of the medium’s great auteurs and visionaries.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a licensing issue with The Seventh Seal, and I’m unable to embed clips from the film on this post. For that reason, I have provided links to various scenes instead: at least now they are only a click away! As ever, please like, rate, comment, and share!
