SEASON 1: EPISODE 3: “First Thoughts on Martin Scorsese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023)”
In this episode, Amy Welborn and I take a brief respite from our series on the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time” to discuss one of the most anticipated cinematic releases of the year—namely, Martin Scorsese’s historical crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon. Though Killers of the Flower Moon was bested by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023) at last weekend’s box office, Scorsese’s new “picture” nevertheless had a strong debut, representing the great director’s third best opening weekend (behind, interestingly enough, Shutter Island and The Departed). Meanwhile, critics have raved about Scorsese’s achievement, calling it “yet another zenith for Martin Scorsese and his collaborators.”
So, what’s all the fuss about? Amy and I explore the main interests and themes of Killers of the Moon, which returns to material that has long fascinated Scorsese—the criminal underworld, the seductiveness of power, and (as I have written about before) questions regarding guilt and forgiveness. At the same time, however, Killers of the Flower Moon sets these perennial questions roughly a century ago among the Osage Nation in rural Oklahoma, making it a truly unique film in Scorsese’s oeuvre. Where does the movie succeed? Where does it stumble? Take a listen and find out. Links are provided below.
