The first season of Just FYI Pod aims to explore the “20 Most Spiritually Significant Films of All Time.” In the last episode, my cohost Amy Welborn and I discussed movie #20 on our respective lists. In our new episode, we move on to #19. Amy selected the 1949 film noir The Third Man; I chose the 1986 period drama The Mission. Requisite links and further details can be found below. The Third Man
Harry Lime (Orson Welles) is found alive and all too well:
Lime and Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) meet in secret on the Wiener Riesenrad:
The film’s final scene, in which Martins is rebuffed by Lime’s lover Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli). This scene features the film’s characteristic zither playing.
The Mission
The former mercenary and slave trader Capt. Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro), undergoing a lengthy penance, is forgiven by the Guariní:
Mendoza, now a Jesuit, argues that threats against the Guariní must be violently opposed. Fr. Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) continues to press for nonviolent resistance:
Cardinal Altamirano (Ray McAnally) laments his role in failing to prevent the “slaughter” of the Guariní. This clip could not be embedded, so follow the link here.
